On April 10 local immigrant rights group Hispanos Unidos de Santa Clarita had a demonstration that went to the Santa Clarita Civic Center with about 25-30 people. They were supported by the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition with representation from LIUNA (Laborer's International Union of North America) and the ANSWER coalition.
Local activist, Maria, spoke about the ongoing repression in the community and how the constant fear people live in makes it so people are afraid to even go out of their houses for groceries. Three of the local candidates running for office in the April 13th elections have an avowed anti-immigrant platform. Maria has talked about two repressive proposals in particular. One would make it so pregnant women who were undocumented would have all access to public services denied. Another more heinous proposal would outright outlaw the hiring of gardeners who were undocumented.
The demonstration was successful in bringing out vocal activists in the community who will not be cowed by racist repression. It will hopefully act as the springboard for future actions in support of immigration reform, including the upcoming big demonstration on May 1st.

El 10 de Abril el grupo local pro-inmigrante Hispanos Unidos de Santa Clarita tuvieron una manifestación que fue al centro municipal de Santa Clarita con aproximadamente 25-30 personas. Ellos fueron apoyado por la Coalición Derechos Plenos por Los Inmigrantes con representación en parte de LIUNA(El El Sindicato Internacional de Obreros de Norteamérica) y la coalición ANSWER.
La activista local, Maria, hablo de la represión actual en la comunidad y como el temor palpable en que la gente vive les hacen miedo aún de salir de sus casas para comestibles. Tres de los candidatos que se presentan por las posiciones políticas de las elecciones de 13 de abril tienen una plataforma política contra los inmigrantes. Maria he hablado especialmente de dos propuestas políticas. Una propuesta quiere hacer lo que las mujeres inmigrantes indocumentadas que están embarazadas no pueden recibir servicios públicos en el futuro. Otra propuesta quiere negar el empleo de los jardineros sin documentos.
La demostración fue un éxito en sacar las activistas mas vocales en la comunidad quienes no se van dejar hacer intimidados por la represión racista. Esperamos que tengamos más manifestaciones en el futuro a favor de la reforma migratoria, incluyendo la próxima manifestación grande en el primero de mayo.
