In the U.S. since the beginning of the year, nine people have been killed by violent neo-Nazis; among them a child, immigrants, an abortion provider and a security guard at the Holocaust Museum. The violent ultra-right is making a comeback.
Beginning mid-August, the Freedom Socialist Party, an organization well-versed in opposing white supremacists, will offer a six-week study of fascism. The sessions will look at the rise of Hitlerism in Europe in the 1930s to understand how the current economic crisis and President Obama's election are fueling the violent ultra-right today. Also addressed will be how to build a movement to stop the ‘Killers for Life,’ gay bashers and white supremacists.
FSP was one of the founders of the United Front Against Fascism which formed in Seattle to protest a 1988 gathering of California-based White Aryan Resistance shortly after three of its skinheads had bludgeoned to death an Ethiopian man in Portland, Oregon. UFAF organized throughout the Pacific Northwest for a decade to counter a surge of neo-Nazi activitiy, including several highly publicized demonstration of the Aryan Nations in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
FSP also helped organize a protest of a white supremacist rally in Simi Valley following the Rodney King verdict. More recently, the Los Angeles chapter organized a demonstration at the border in defense of immigrants and in opposition to the vigilante Minutemen organization.
