July 26 Noche Cubana in Los Angeles -A Success

Los Angeles- The commemoration of the 55th year anniversary of the attack on Moncada, Cuba led by Commanant Fidel Castro called “Noche Cubana” – A Night of Music, Food, Film, Dancing and Solidarity With Cuba” by the ANSWER Coalition was a success.

The event was held at Remy’s on Temple-An Art Gallery at 2126 Temple St. in Historic Filipinotown from 7:00 to 12:00 PM. Hundreds of guests were treated to a night of dancing, songs and films as well as sumptuous food and drinks.

Exactly 55 years ago on July 26, Cuban patriots led by Fidel Castro stormed the Batista barracks in Moncada. They failed and many died and were imprisoned but ignited the passion of the Cuban people to change Cuba. On January 1, 1959 Cuba was liberated. Thus turning a military defeat into a plotical victory, July 26 is remembered today as a significant day of Cuba.

Despite the presence of scores of aging anti-Castro exiles who lived down the streets at Temple St. who demonstrated across Temple St. there were no unfortunate incident whatsoever.

This was the first time in almost a decade when the aging exiles demonstrated against socialist Cuba and their solidarity friends. It was the first ever demonstration of Cubans against a Filipino owned property in Historic Filipinotown in eleven (11) years.

Remy’s-An Art Gallery is owned by Joselyn Geaga-Rosenthal, and was named after Remedios Geaga, president of FACLA, the oldest Filipino non –profit agency in Los Angeles established in 1945. The Alliance-Philippines (AJLPP), a part of ANSWER Coalition supported the event.
