Vote Yes! for Humane
Treatment of Animals
THIS ELECTION DAY, Nov. 4, 2008, Californians will vote
on the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, a historic
ballot initiative to greatly improve the lives of millions
of farm animals. The measure would prevent three of factory
farming’s cruelest forms of confinement:
• Battery cages: tiny, barren enclosures that confine nearly
19 million egg-laying hens in California so tightly they can’t
walk or spread their wings. Each caged hen has less space
than a sheet of letter-sized paper.
• Gestation crates: 2-foot-wide metal cages that confine
thousands of breeding pigs in California for most of their
lives. The pigs can’t turn around or exercise.
• Veal crates: tiny wooden crates in which male calves are
trapped for most of their lives, unable to turn around for months on end.
A Growing Movement
Arizona, Florida, and Oregon have banned gestation crates, and Arizona has also banned
veal crates. Major California companies are moving away from supporting all three systems,
which have been banned in the European Union.
The Environment
Factory farms are among the most serious causes of resource depletion, pollution,
and global warming.
Public Health and Animal Health
Small farmers traditionally allow animals room to turn around and extend their limbs.
This effort will affect only industrialized factory farms, which not only cause severe
animal suffering but also squeeze family farmers out of business.
