Utah Mining Disaster – Act of God or Act of Management?

with

Joe Maine, Retired Director,

United Mineworkers Health & Safety Dept.

Following the deadly year in the mines in 2006, when 47 workers were killed, the Mine Safety and Health Administration reports that 10 miners have died on the job so far this year. Last year’s death toll was the highest since 1996. Now 6 Utah coal miners

remain trapped following a cave-in 1,500 feet under-ground in the non-union mine owned by Utah American Energy. We’ll examine how effectively the Bush administration has implemented the MINER Act’s requirements and what additional safety measures are needed.
