The city landfill in Haleyville, Alabama, birthplace of the 9-1-1 emergency phone system, is reportedly leaching pollutants onto the roadways and into the headwaters of the Buttahatchee River which flows through Alabama and Mississippi.
Haleyville officials are ignoring the problem, and insult or threaten local citizens who try to get it stopped (a local official recently reportedly intimidated a sick, elderly woman to tears, in an attempt to shut up her NEIGHBOR who is resisting the city on its stand.)
NBC TV-13 in Birmingham investigated and ran three segments on the landfill pollution, but to no avail. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) says they are too understaffed to investigate for a possible bio-hazard along Haleyville roadways near the city landfill.
Unconfirmed sources also report that the state is investigating a private "dump" owned by Haleyville Mayor Larry Albright, but ADEM denies any such investigation.
