Zoila Meyer, a Cuban-born immigrant who has lived here all but 9 months of her life, and is a model of citizenship, and a former City Council member in Adelanto, CA, faces deportation because she may have only been a legal resident, not a naturalized citizen.

Though she may not have been top of the class, she's done okay for herself, attaining several vocational degrees at the local colleges, while raising four children. On top of that, she ran for, and won a City Council seat. She thought she was a citizen, and voted regularly since turning 18. By certifying on the paperwork that she was a citizen, she technically perjured herself.

Looking over the internet stories, it looks like she was found out back in 2005. Anti-immigrant people (or anti-illegal-immigrant people if you prefer) have advocated online for her deportation, specifically because she voted. They make the most extreme arguments for following the letter of the law, and totally ignore the spirit of the law. Not only that: they criticized her poor grammar and punctuation, but used poor grammar and punctuation themselves.
