An air raid by the US air force has killed 100 civilians in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand, the provincial governor has said.



Governor Assadullah Wafa said a village in Sangin district of Helmand province was bombed by the Americans late on Tuesday in revenge for the death of one of the coalition troops.

"Twenty-one women and children as well as other civilians, were killed," the governor said.

Wafa said the coalition forces had told him that for every one coalition soldier killed they would kill 100 civilians in return.



He said there had been intense fighting in Sangin in recent days and one soldier was killed and a number injured.
