LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - March 20, 2007 –
The International Labor Office estimates human trafficking generates $32 billion annually. According to the US Department of Justice an estimated 17,500 people are forced into prostitution, sweat-shops, and domestic servitude in the U.S. every year. University of San Francisco ethics professor and author of Not For Sale, Dr. David Batstone, approximates there are around 200,000 human slaves in America right now. This “new” form of slavery is especially evident in Southern California and along the Mexican border, where NBC San Diego’s Channel 4 News was able to film, and then broadcast, one Oceanside, CA human trafficking ring in action (the news clip can be viewed on ‘Youtube’ now at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nMYUx27VSk). The overwhelming evidence of, proximity to, and devastating effects of human trafficking prompted The Freedom Project.
