The "Harvest of Shame" 1960 TV documentary program has been updated with the same horrifying conditions for the people who harvest our food and build and repair our homes, while they have almost no food and no homes, right here in filthy rich USA.
The Los Angeles Times, 3/26/07, in a story by David Kelly, "The Southland's hidden Third World slums
In the Coachella Valley, hundreds of trailer parks house desperately poor Latino workers amid burning trash, mud, contaminated water." at http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-trailerpark26mar26,0,3370103.story?coll=la-home-local describes the massive poverty in trailer parks for the farm workers and construction workers from Mexico, trying to survive in the US, after fleeing the same horrible conditions in Mexico. They lack adequate living space, bathing water, toilets, electricity and clean air in the trailer parks which allow these illegal conditions so far. The $100 billion the Democrat-Republicans just gave to the war profiteers in Iraq could easily pay for the construction of housing for all these workers, plus education for the children so they stay in school, and so the girls do nto get pregnant and drop out of school, and so the girls learn about birth control and abortion. A related story by David Kelly on 3/26/07, "Teachers shocked at students' home life: New instructors start out with a bus tour of conditions in the filthy trailer parks that their kids face daily." tells more. In the USA, 26 million children go to school hungry where they can get a free lunch as their parents do not earn enough to feed them. This is more than 50% of the 47 million children ages 6 to 17 in the US. The profits being made from the labor of their parents in the fields and on the construction sites could easily pay for decent housing with plenty of money still left for the employers. The military budget of the US could easily pay for housing and food for all who need it. We cannot have guns and butter.
