Lt. Governor Candidate Proposes Rail System

Stewart Alexander, a candidate for California lieutenant governor, is proposing that the state take a more active role to eliminate traffic congestion between Riverside and Orange County with the development of an elevated twin rail system to move commuters along the busy 91 Freeway.

The idea proposes a twin rail system that would cover an approximate 30 mile stretch between Highway 91 and portions of Highway 55 and I-15 in Corona. The rail system would help to eliminate much of the grid lock and the pollution caused by traffic being parked on the freeways.

This plan is also designed to create regional parking facilities near regional malls and outlets to help stimulate commerce in a growing community.

Stewart Alexander is opposed to the present plan to drill holes in the Santa Ana Mountains and the Cleveland National Forest; building a 10 mile tunnel to connect West Riverside County to Irvine in Orange County.

The concerns, which are shared by many groups, are that the tunnel would only create more bumper to bumper traffic and would not reduce pollution or our dependency on oil. Also many groups, including the Sierra Club, believe a tunnel would create a potential negative impact on wildlife in the forest and threaten an endangered species reserve.

Much of the congestion in the region is attributed to the jobs being in Orange County and Southern Los Angeles County, with commuters living in West Riverside County. The twin rail proposal would create thousands of good paying jobs in West Riverside County to help reduce the flow of traffic. Alexander believes it is important that we take the jobs to the areas where rapid growth in population is occurring.

Recently Alexander shared an ambitious 75 billion dollar plan to revive the struggling American automobile industry and to bring automobile manufacturing back to California. This is another plan, by the candidate, to bring good paying jobs to Southern California and the Inland Empire.

Over 50 years ago Walt Disney had a vision of where the world should be going for efficient transportation and clean air; Alexander says, “It was a great vision and we should stay on that track.”
