MESA, Ariz. Police have started charging laborers and the drivers who pick them up at a particular intersection in Mesa with criminal trespassing.
The southeast corner of Gilbert and Broadway roads is one of the most popular spots for day labor pickups along the Broadway corridor.
The move coincides with the creation of a business coalition that hopes to move day laborers out of the area.
The coalition is working to get the support of businesses at the intersection so similar enforcement can begin there.
Mesa police say a criminal trespassing citation can be issued only if the businesses are willing to prosecute. In the past, businesses have told police to ask the laborers to leave, but were unwilling to prosecute.
Criminal trespassing is misdemeanor punishable with up to a 500-dollar fine and 30 days in jail.
