What do you think of the new direction in KPFK news?

by more rational Sunday, Mar. 06, 2005 at 3:35 AM

Please comment on the direction of KPFK news.

Things that are being brought up:

- New on the hour.

- Less editorializing in the news content.

- More outreach and coverage of outlying areas.

- Prime time Spanish bilingual show.

- Traffic reports.

Other things:

- ISDN lines in the community areas to do remotes.

- "promo card" to give discounts at businesses.

The two new news directors are Mollie Page and Fernando Velasquez.

"- Prime time Spanish bilingual show.

"

Do you have any stats regarding the percentage of KPFK listeners who speak only Spanish. I'm guessing it's extremely low.

Bi lingual broadcasts of KPFK seems very gratuitous.

KPFK news

by Sheepdog Sunday, Mar. 06, 2005 at 5:33 AM

I haven't listened to it for awhile. It's got to be better than the slanted coverage KPFT allows the BBC to play. Ever listened to KPFT?

Its only saving grace is the local music and sunday gospel choirs.

Ill check it out and return with withering critique. :>)

oh my comments (duh)

by more rational Sunday, Mar. 06, 2005 at 1:36 PM

I think the station is trying to get a more corporate sound. i will miss the snide commentary. It was funny. You just have to mentally edit it out to get the straight story. Of course, you have to do that with the regular news too, but in the other direction. My gut feeling is to worry. The station has done extremely well with the current editorial direction, and the city already has two NPR stations. We don't need another New Age NPR clone with in-depth fluff, and glossed over malfeasance.

There are 150 radio stations in LA, and only one was solidly against the war. People weren't turning to KPFK because it had both sides. They were trying to get the fuck away from all the other stations whipping up war frenzy. The current formula works.

Getting Fernando V. on there was, I think, a concession to the activists. Fine. He's a good guy. If he can work within the framework they're proposing, it can be a win for the activists. He can put the real news into the shiny package the current bosses are pushing for.

The bilingual program is pretty good. It's a good way to get used to Spanish. It's not easy listening, but, not everything is. Also, progressive Spanish language radio station, on a different freq, is a possible new avenue for KPFK.

I think that Indymedia is going to have to rev up again, maybe get rid of trolls like me. If KPFK steps to the right, the volunteers on the left will have to create another floodchannel of news to counter the right-ward motion.

la indy radio?

by felix Monday, Mar. 07, 2005 at 12:45 PM

I know this is off topic but an la indymedia radio station would be cool mabey not broadcasted but online possibly? I hear this can be done fairly cheaply but I dunno. as for kpfk I have liked it sence I moved down here, its been a nice refuge from all the other noise. alos I like the spanish brodcasts. Ive allways wanted to learn spanish and Its nice to get used to it while hearing other lefties talk, I think its important for rich privliged white californians to open up there airwaves and service other comunitys. and again Its a fun way to learn spanish. Its fun to hear people talk shit on george bushin other languages and to try to figure out exactly what there saying. yay for fun!

Es bilingue

El futuro es bilingue.

not the news but...

by Sheepdog Tuesday, Mar. 08, 2005 at 3:28 PM

KPFK

Good morning, LA – Mallissa Boyle and her book promotion of Denial and Deception

Cozy, apologetic interviews with spook 'field operatives'. How cute to be available to further the myth that our 'intelligence' services didn't know about the 9-11 event while make covert operations look Fun...

'We failed to make the tactical warning- miss characterized -didn't have that level of detail – etc. etc. etc. Puke.

I'd sure like to interview the lady, personally, with a polygraph and voice stress analyzer.

KPFK and Sonali Kolhatkar...

by Sheepdog Tuesday, Mar. 08, 2005 at 4:34 PM

Is shilling an apologist and PR man for the Syrian propaganda campaign and never mentions the Reason that Syria was invited into Lebnon... the Israeli invasion and awful bloodshed which is referred to as a 'civil war.'

News at KPFK

by PulauJ Wednesday, Mar. 09, 2005 at 4:53 AM

KPFK news would be better if it had some structure. I never know from day to day who/what I will hear at a particular time. The entire KPFK drive time programs have become total leftist rambling junk. I'll even brave Air America's AM format with commercials just to hear someone that is sane and progressive on the air. NPR is in the process of choking itself by trying to cater to left and right while broadcasting mostly fluff. KPFK has a golden opportunity to create a polished and progressive news program that could attract people that have OD'd on NPRs cotton candy news. NPR keeps raising its rates for programming, including the news. KPFK now (and later Pacifica) could produce a good news show that could be offered to other community stations at a lower cost than NPR with more progressive content.

NPR catering to the left!!? Gi'me a *break*!!

PalauJ: "NPR is in the process of choking itself by trying to cater to left ..."

YEAH, RRRRIGHT...!!

TELL US ANOTHER ONE!!

the trilingual future

by more rational Thursday, Mar. 10, 2005 at 11:46 AM

Holy moly. I'm mostly monolingual, and it's starting to dawn on me that there's a large trilingual population in LA. They know English, Spanish, and a third language (usually their parents') with reasonable fluency. Us Americans trying the two-language thing are not even at that level.

LOL so true about NPR

by more rational Thursday, Mar. 10, 2005 at 12:08 PM

That NPR network is working itself into total irrelevance. There are a lot of organizations putting new canned news out there. KPFK uses Workers Indepedent News Service, WINS, and I like it okay. It has limited scope. FSRN tries, and does a better job than KPFK. FSRN was an outgrowth of the old Pacifica takeover attempt, and also intersected with IMC a while.

The NPR-wannabe product on KPCC is pleasant, but, it's pablum for the "little Eichmanns" of the world, and well paid bureaucrats and middle managers who dabble in the stock market, and fancy themselves socially responsible little bankers. What on earth is "Marketplace". An appeal to moderate Republicans? A friendly face of the IMF?

grrrrrrrr

On the other hand, KPCC and KCRW have really listenable programmers. Larry Mantle and Warren Olney are smart and listenable. That is a challenge. (I'm still a bigger fan of Jerry Q.)

Amy Goodman

by Sheepdog Friday, Mar. 11, 2005 at 5:13 PM

Democracy Now!

Who is writing for Amy's teleprompter?

al- CIAduh claimed responsibility for the bomb in Iraq?

Doesn't she mean a group claiming to be al-CIAduh, took responsibility?

And she keeps calling the chimp, 'president' instead of the many other available options.
