To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to bring to your attention highly prejudicial remarks made by Reverend Jisei Nagasaka of the Nichiren Shoshu Temples in New York and Washington. Recently Mr. Nagasaka has been claiming in public sermons that religions other than his are “imperfect religions.” In particular he has been critical of the Ten Commandments, informing his congregants that they must “discard the imperfect precepts of imperfect religions and ideas such as the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments.” According to Mr. Nagasaka, if all people were to join his sect “we won’t need precepts such as the Ten Commandments.”
He has posted his remarks on his temple’s website and they can be found at http://www.nstny.org/discardprecepts.htm and http://www.nstny.org/discardprecepts.htm.
I am sure that his remarks are offensive to all Christians. They are also very offensive to mainstream Buddhists like me. Our religion is one of tolerance. I am asking all Christians to understand that Mr. Nagasaka’s remarks reflect only his fringe sect and are not representative of the beliefs of all other Buddhists who deeply respect Christianity.
Letters of protest can be sent to either his New York or Washington, DC temples:
