Iraqi intelligence boss General Muhammad Abd Allah Shahwani released statistics today which place the resistance to American occupation in his country at almost a quarter of a million.
"I think the resistance is bigger than the US military in Iraq. I think the resistance is more than 200,000 people," stated the top spy.
The assessment of his agency is that there are now 40,000 full time and 200,000 part timers actively engaged in the conflict. These figures are significantly higher than what the United States government is reporting to the public.
American military experts Bruce Hoffman of the Rand Corporation and the Anthony Cordesman with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies are recorded in Arab media as having accepted these estimates as believable.
