Rosemead Wal-Mart

by johnk Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at 10:58 PM

This is a request for coverage, as well as an update on the events.

Hey folks. I think there's some potential for an interesting news piece or something in the Rosemead Wal-Mart fight. So far, it's been on the nightly news, and in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune (which is mostly pro-Wal-Mart), and on KCET Life and Times (which basically trended pro-Wal-Mart too).

What makes this interesting is that the City Council seems to be totally supporting Wal-Mart. They're unanimously for it. The community group protesting it has been pretty successful, at least at collecting signatures. We suspect that if it went to a vote, it would not pass. However, it will not go to a vote, because the City Council rescinded their decision to approve the Development Agreement. Wal-Mart says it will move forward on the project without the stipulations in the DA contract. Wal-Mart thinks it's found a loophole.

The community group is an interesting mix of people. Many ages, mostly older, various political persuasions, ethnically mixed somewhat. Wal-Mart also has some interesting people, including a development consultant they've hired to fabricate a grassroots group.

Also, an election will come soon, with three Council people up for re-election. The three opposing candidates are anti-Wal-Mart. Two candidates are young, while two of the incumbents are near retirement age.

There's also a lot of other intersting stuff that's not mentioned here.
