Forgive me, but I've been all over the web looking for the day when we get out into the streets over this.
Not a one day protest, but going Ukrainian or Serbian. If you remember the Serbs toppled Milosevic after he tried to steal power getting out and staying out in the streets. The Ukranians are on their way to electoral justice.
We on the other hand, are sitting in our liberal groups whining.
What is wrong with us?
The Green party is even having trouble getting enough people to help with the Ohio recount http://www.votecobb.org/participate/
Do you think any protests will be effective when they decide to reinstate the draft? Do you think after Bush is installed again that protests will be safe? The falling gas prices and the extra flags and pro-Bush bumberstickers that popped up after November 3rd should show you that they know the election is not yet final.
It will get a lot worse come February 2005.
We need to set a date to get out in the streets.
I can't get to Washington or Ohio, but I can spend some hours every night in the local city center after work--others could go during the day. College students should be getting a vacation soon how about them?
The only thing I hear about are one day affairs. Haven't we noticed this doesn't work?
And a big protest on inaugaration day? Is that a joke. Are we just playing at this?
If your family knows about the stolen election and feels like you do borrow money based on the fact that you are going to be working to make sure that justice is done.
If not just beg and borrow on the fact that they love you.
Get what you need to keep yourself viably warm and fed and get to somewhere.
Talk to your friends, try to get in contact with groups in your area or the area you want to go to that might be receptive to this idea so you have contacts, possibly a place to stay free too..
F*** the holidays. There is a reason they hold the election at the beginning of the holiday season--We Americans are too stupid to flip them off even when our democracy is dying.
Use your holiday break to protest everyday--hopefully in Washington or Ohio. Other alternatives are the biggest University around and/or City Centers. (City Centers can't be barred to non students and so may be superior.)
By the time the heated buses arrive to pick people up on this it will be too late. Four years of hell and a draft.
Yeah, we need organization of a loose level to help people staying away from home or for transportation, but this time the organizations seem to be letting us down, too much in love with the traditional one day protest. From reports Ukranians worked a loose organization using cell phones from the sites of their continuing protests.
The Ukranian and Serbian actions show that a concerted presence in the streets does work even when the government seems to unmoveable.
And if you hear of a lone person protesting for a full investigation of the 2004 election- every night in the center of a big city -that'll be me. I'll have given up on any organization being of any use in this and I'll just go.
(Caveat: if all you can or are willing to do is get to a one day protest, or if you want to help with the recounts, don't let me stop you. Try to make it just a part of what you will do though. We must redifine liberal activism. Because business as usual isn't working.)
