Breakdown of Some Significant Losses to Gay Community in Last Election
Here are just a few of the recent election losses for gays and lesbians:
Eleven (11) new state constitutional amendments were passed, banning same-sex marriage. Most of these actually made illegal public and private civil union arrangements previously legal! This is the story the media has truly been negligent in reporting.
There was also the election of four new Republicans to the Senate, including two, Tom Coburn in Oklahoma and Jim DeMint in South Carolina, who unabashedly denigrate gays openly. Their anti-gay rhetoric during the campaign hardly made the mainstream news.
Also, the re- election of President Bush, who has endorsed a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage was a terrible blow to the gay rights movement.
Most disturbing was the ascendancy of an ever growing number of activist republican gays, who remarkably worked and voted against their own civil rights, in favor of a radical right wing ideology of severely limited government and military expansion.
These are just a few of the unbelievably sad losses suffered by the gay community in this election cycle. All citizens in favor of civil rights for all can only hope these developments are temporary and will be rolled back. Yet, with the possibility of the appointment of radical right judges to the High Court during the next four years, and the overwhelming control of the rest of government by the Republicans, the future for the gay community looks dim indeed.
