FBI orders UK ISP to hand over IMC Server
Rackspace, a London ISP which hosts UK Indymedia's server received a
federal order earlier today to turn over all hardware hosting Indymedia
websites to the FBI. The server hosted UK Indymedia as well as numerous
local IMCs including Belgium and African imcs, Palestine, UK, Germany,
and Brasil, Italy, Uruguay, Poland, Belgrade, Portugal, and more. As of
yet the reasons behind the demand are unknown, but it is suspected that
it has to do with an FBI request to remove a post on the Nantes IMC that
had a photo of undercover Swiss police. The FBI claimed there were
threats and personal information contained within the post, a charge
that was untrue. The undercover police photographed on the page were
photographing protesters. Rackspace is a United States based company,
however they also provide colocation facilities in the UK, where these
servers were located. Rackspace is currently building another server to
replace the one lost which will be online shortly, and have apologized
for the abruptness of the turnover, explaining that they are "required
to comply with all federal orders of this nature".
