What: A free performance of magic by Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense.
When: Saturday Oct 2. 6:00 PM.
Where: The Magic Castle, 7001 Franklin Avenue Hollywood, California.
Secretary of Defense, Donald H. Rumsfeld, is well known for his powerful leadership. Yet his hobbies, including football, gardening and magic, are rarely shared with the public. On Saturday the 2nd of October he will provide a demonstration of his conjuring in a public performance at the Hollywood institution- The Magic Castle. This event is free and open to the public. Although the magician will not reveal his illusions, there will be a casual question and answer session with the press after the show.
This event allows the public to see another side of the Secretary of Defense, and is a rare opportunity to visit The Magic Castle, a members only club.
The first 100 visitors will be seated.
The Magic Castle is the private clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts, a very special organization devoted to the advancement of the ancient art of magic. The purpose of The Academy is to encourage and promote public interest in the art of magic, with particular emphasis on preserving its history as an art form, entertainment medium, and hobby. Beginning with a charter membership of 150, the Academy has grown into a world-renowned fraternal organization with a membership of nearly 5,000.

Presto magico! Rummy's trying to make the people of Iraq and Afghanistan disappear in a big cloud of smoke! Think he can do it all by himself using just his top hat and a magic wand? Or does he need to call in the U.S. Air Force for some assistance?

I was there. As a member of the Magic Castle, I had no problem getting in to see the show. However, Rumsfeld was rather invisible. When I asked more senior members when he would make his grand appearance, they said that the Magic Castle apparently hadn't "authorized" the press release. Those in the "know" are of the opinion that this information was leaked to an outside source and then promoted to call attention to it. Well, that it did!! Rummy was a no-show, possibly for fear of protests.
There was a small crowd at the bottom of the driveway, and the MC staff reported a large number of phone calls adn drive-ups who just got turned away before parking. I don't know if they were "Magicians Against the War" or not. Does this group actually exist? If so, I want in.
I do know that in the past, various politicians (including presidents) have attended shows, and you would never hear a word about it beforehand. When Reagan showed up (the guy, not the ghost), there was no motorcade or anything. Just low-key SS. Certainly no promotion...
The posters and flyers certainly caught some attention inside the Castle. A bit of confusion and a lot of wry smiles. Certainly a bewildering illusion! It's kind of a shame, though, that the protest wasn't larger. Even as a symbolic gesture (like most protest) I think it could have brought some well-deserved attention to the tricks and deception within our current administration.
