Japanese Whaling

by Lawrence Hearn Friday, Jul. 30, 2004 at 11:03 AM

An effective way to protest Japanese whaling.

Japan intends to resume whaling. Although it never really stopped, disguising its slaughter as 'scientific research'. Along with Norway and Iceland as well as small island nations that have been bribed for their votes at the International Whaling Commission Japan intends to openly commit this totally unnecessary, cruel and barbaric, species-cide no matter what the IWC decides. However, the millions and millions of people who are sickened by this decision have a real power to demonstrate opposition to Japan's whaling - boycotting the buying of new Japanese cars. This is Japan's achilles heal. Along with not buying Japanese cars (and everything else) the Japanese Government should be informed of this action. The email addresses of Japanese Embassies and consulates as well as the Japanese Foreign Ministry can be found at http://www.bcpoetry.com.

a more effective way

A more effective way to protest would be to support anti-whaling advocates and ecologists in Japan, and report their work here and globally. The people there will be able to apply internal pressure and effect cultural changes to make whaling unacceptable.

Whaling is an old cultural practice for some people. It's not the hunting that's inherently wrong, but the scale at which it is performed, when it becomes a commercial practice.

interesting article about whaling and media

The article linked is an overview of saving the whales.

Though I'm mostly for the banning of whaling, except as a limited, ritual cultural practice, the article makes some good points.
