Monday June 28th, a month after the illegal arrests of approximately 111 protestors at the ALCUE summit in Guadalajara, a forum and silent march was held in that same city to protest the continued detainment of 28 individuals. The forum, titled “Forum for human rights, constitutional legality and the liberation of all political prisoners,” offered community members the opportunity to reconstruct the events of the May 26-28 and analyze their next step. Everyone, from unionists to anarchists, “agreed that [what happened] was a kidnapping by the state, psychological and physical torture, and that the imprisoned must be released,” said members of Otro Mayo Guadalajara, one of the coordinating organizations for yesterday’s events. A silent march to the Jalisco state government headquarters followed the forum with about 500 in attendance.
While the actions convinced the Governor of the state of Jalisco to receive a committee to examine the legality of police actions during the Summit, organizers continue to lament the high price posted for the release of imprisoned. The total sum to free the imprisoned comes to approximately $47,500 USD. This reporter interviewed members of Otro mayo Guadalajara about the meaning of international solidarity. “International solidarity is most needed in times of crisis," explained one member. Participant groups have put out the call for economic support, and have received no replies whatsoever.
