Crochet workshop and community based project at M&A on June 5 from 3-6 pm.

Come learn to crochet and be a part of an exciting community based architectural project. We want to recycle and create some much-needed shade. M&A will host several weekend workshops led by the radical urban craft group the Los Angeles Needle Exchange. These workshops will focus on re-using plastic grocery bags to crochet and knit a large sunscreen that will cover the M&A courtyard exhibition space. Workshops are free of charge and include materials and tools. Bring white plastic bags.

Shade is a joint effort of M&A and the Los Angeles Needle Exchange colliding craft and architecture in an attempt to transform the remnants of post-consumption into useable building materials. Inspired by the lyrical quality of the plastic bag caught on an air current, the accessibility of the source materials, and the organic quality of the crochet stitch we work long hours as a temporary community to create a sunscreen to bring relief from the sun.

M&A is a neighborhood architecture and landscape center with a compulsion to increase urban greenspace and affordable green building techniques while sharing the latest ideas in architectural design and theory.

The Los Angeles Needle Exchange is an open group of radical urban crafters who focus on collective needle based projects that challenge the notion of craft and create large- scale craft based works with political intent and messages. They meet the third Sunday of each month in Highland Park at Flor Y Canto and the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in San Pedro at Walled City Gallery.
