A few days ago FOX TV news reported on the inauguration of Thabo Mbeki.
The reporter said that Mbeki's speech highlighted poverty, crime, and AIDS
as South Africa's major problems to be tackled in his second term.
I checked Mbeki's speech and newspaper reports in SA, Mbeki never once
mentioned AIDS or HIV. Sam Mhlongo attended the inauguration and confirmed
that Mbeki never said AIDS or HIV.
I have criticized US press and media for what they chronically don't cover
or mention. But when it comes to AIDS they make up the news. The fact that
Mbeki did not mention either AIDS or HIV during his campaign and
inauguration speech is real news that people should have the opportunity
of knowing.
The former Soviet Union was plagued with a chronically lying press. It got
so bad that eventually the only people who believed what they saw on
Soviet TV or read in newspapers were the liars themselves.
