IRAQI LABOR UNDER SIEGE with
ISSAM SHUKRI, Iraqi labor organizer and a founder of the Union of Unemployed in Iraq.
The Union of Unemployed in Iraq, founded in May 2003, emerged as the first significant and mass initiative by Iraqi workers to confront the wide scale unemployment caused by the US war. Within
a few months, the UUI signed up over 150,000 members. "Jobs or Unemployment Benefit" became the union's battle cry. In addition, it demanded a significant role in job distribution. UUI became a world renowned radical working class organization for its 45-day sit-in protest across from CPA headquarters in Baghdad despite continuous attacks and repression by the American forces.
