"Secret Identities" (lecture at CSULA on the black roots of Agentine culture)

by Humanist Association at Cal State L.A. Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at 3:00 AM

"Identidades Secretas: La negritud en Argentina" is a very solid and original investigation on the hidden roots of Argentine culture. This book shows the essential relevance of the afroargentine component in the genuine Argentine identity. On one hand, the political and racist motivations for such a cover-up in the name of official history are exposed. On the other hand, the book is a model of a politically meaningful understanding of "cultural studies."

Alejandro Solomianski, the author of the book, was born in Buenos Aires in 1963, has taught in Buenos Aires and Pittsburgh, and is currently a professor at CSULA. he has received research fellowships from the Mellon and Rockefeller Foundations and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Dr. Solomianski will deliver the lecture in Spanish, with translation provided by Professor Maria Dolores Costa.

Refreshments will be provided.

This event is sponsored by the Humanist Association at CSULA and co-sponsored by the Latin American Society, the Latin American Studies Program, and Sigma Delta Pi.
