Dead Mother's Embrace Saves Iranian Baby's Life
December 29, 2003
Reuters
BAM, Iran - A baby girl cradled in her dead mother's arms
was rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in Bam, officials
said on Monday -- a rare moment of joy amid the devastation of Iran's
earthquake.
Red Crescent aid officials told Reuters the mother's protective
embrace had shielded six-month-old Nassim from falling debris and
saved her life.

Four Survivors Found in Iran Quake Rubble
December 31, 2003
AP News
BAM, Iran - Soldiers pulled four more people alive from the rubble of
Iran's devastating earthquake, hours after rescue workers had all but
given up hope of finding survivors and focused their efforts on relief
and preventing disease.
As the death toll from Friday's 6.6-magnitude quake reached at least
28,000, the discovery late Tuesday of two men and two women amazed
health
workers handling the aftermath of the disaster. Normally, people
trapped
under collapsed buildings can survive three days — a deadline that
expired
Monday morning.

"At least 20,000 people are said to have died as a huge earthquake
flattens a city in southeast Iran. The ancient city of Bam has been
devastated - most of its buildings have been flattened including two
hospitals and a 16th Century citadel."
Everyone has heard the above news. We know the earthquake in Bam,
Kerman- Iran, has destroyed the city. There are thousands of people
who lost their lives in this devastating tragedy. There are also
thousands of people who are injured and need our help. Two of my
relatives have lost their loved ones in this earthquake and they are
departing from San Francisco for Bam/Iran on Sunday. I am collecting
medicines of all kind that are not expired so the families can take
them to Iran for distribution to the injured people.
Please bring your extra or unused medicines especially Antibiotics &
Painkillers to This Persian store "Bazar Norouz in 1390 S Bascom Ave.,
San Jose" as soon as possible. I also would like to ask you a favor of
sharing this e-mail with whoever you think that could be of help.
I will go to Iran with my husband next week on January 4, 2004, and we
will take some more medicine too. You can also donate money or blood
to
Red Cross near you. The Red Cross web address is www.redcross.org.
Your
help is appreciated in any way you can.

7. Fundraiser Bike Ride For Earthquake Relief:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**Forwarded Message
Dear Friends at home and abroad,
The recent earthquake in eastern Iran has killed more than 20,000 and
injured 35,000 people. Around 50,000 people lost their livelihood and
based on the official reports, cash help is what is most needed.
I am considering a fund raising bike ride from Syria, where I work and
live, to Iran or inside Iran to draw attentions to this catastrophe.
This bike ride is an excuse to run an on-line campaign to collect money
for the UN emergency program in Iran.
I appreciate your input and your help.
I need help:
1. to find contact in UN Iran and Iranian Organizations that might
be interested in this bike ride and give me first hand advice. I am not
living in Iran and it is very difficult to contact these people via
Internet
2. to set up a website for this fund raising bike ride and keep it
alive when I am riding, publicizing the website and inform Iranians who
are living abroad.
3. run an e-mail campaign during the time that the bike ride will
happen which will be between 2 to 3 months.
Happy New Year and best regards,
ALI K. BANGI
Shirin Ebadi recently became the first Iranian woman to be awarded a
Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting human rights and democracy in
Iran. With this award, the eyes of the world have turned once again to
Iran and its social and political dynamism.
A debate is raging among students, reformists, and theocrats in Iran
and among Iranian communities in diaspora over the appropriate
relationship between politics and religion in the country--does
religion
have a place in Iranian politics, and if so, what should its role be?
Is Iran moving toward democracy, and what would a democratic Iran look
like?
The country's conservative Islamic government and its constitution are
theocratic, and yet many intellectuals insist that the democratization
is possible from within the system.
What is the status of U.S.-Iran relations, and how is this relationship
being impacted by the war in Iraq and the ongoing American military
presence in the region? Concerns remain over the direction and purpose
of Iran's weapons program; will the country emerge as a nuclear power,
and if so, how will this impact Iran's regional and global power
relations?
Finally, what is the status of human rights in Iran today? As Iran
continues the privatization of its economy at home and opens up
economically to the world, how is the country dealing with domestic
social concerns, including poverty and unemployment? What are Iran's
prospects for progress and prosperity in the coming years? Please join
us for an Asia Society panel discussion on Iran's present and future.
To register for this program, please contact the Asia Society at
