Wes Clark answers our SOA concerns!

by Rick Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at 11:01 PM

“We don't know how lucky we are here - A major candidate is willing to listen to what we say and, if he won't do EVERYTHING we want, he'll at least do what's possible - and even give us the credit where credit is due. Other candidates would not have even bothered to answer. Wes Clark has acknowledged our SOA concerns, and that's more than any of the major candidates have. Indeed, all the other major candidates are happy to ignore our concerns and leave the SOA as it is - without even reforming it.”

Here is Clark's answer:

http://clark04.com/issues/soa/

"Statement of General Wesley Clark on the School of the Americas

(now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation)

I strongly condemn human rights abuses of any kind. Throughout my career, I have fought to protect the fundamental rights of all people and to promote democratic values that empower people to prevent abuses of power and combat them when they occur.

It is unacceptable that some who passed through the School of the Americas [this happened BEFORE he was in command] (now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) committed human rights abuses. Those that did should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - as should all who commit war crimes or crimes against humanity. In order to prevent such abuses from happening in the future, we must promote a policy of engagement and education with friends and allies in the region.

I strongly support the reforms that have been implemented at WHISC and encourage careful vetting of students. I strongly support oversight measures that ensure that antidemocratic principles are not taught at the school. Thanks to the work of human rights campaigners and others [That's us], WHISC is constantly improving the way it teaches the Army's values of respect for human rights, for civil institutions, and for dissent."

So, while the other major candidates are happy to leave the SOA as it is, Clark has the desire and ability to reform it. As he described it, "If a bunch of crooks like the guys at Enron and Tyco graduate from a business school, would you CLOSE the business school or reform it?"

We don't know how lucky we are here - A major candidate is willing to listen to what we say and, if he won't do EVERYTHING we want, he'll at least do what's possible - and even give us the credit where credit is due. Other candidates would not have even bothered to answer.

That's far better than other candidates! So if you want someone who listens to us, who has the ability and desire to take on the military-industrial complex, and who can really, really smash the sh!t out of Bush and the neocons, join me in helping out with the Clark campaign!
