The region under attack in Morelos Mexico is a small indigenous community in the south of Mexico. The people of Tlalnepantla have expressed their wishes to have a autonomous zone free from government and corporate interference..
Here in el Norte (US), we have also seen any attempts to peacefully resist the oppressive government met with violence. The M.O.V.E. house in West Philadelphia was also bombed into submission by the Philadelphia Police. They grew their own fresh vegetables and distributed food to the neighborhood. This caused the City of Philadelphia to view them as a threat, since they would no longer be making money for the corporations through wage slavery or taxes. Mumia talked about this after the mainstream media refused to discuss the bombing by police helicopters of the West Philly neighborhood..
We express solidad with the people of Tlalnepantla, Morelos against the corporate backed Mexican government. The Plan Puebla Panama has the Lacondon rainforest scheduled to be clear cut by Boise Cascade and International Paper. Grupo Pulsar attempts to add genetic engineered trees and crops to the region against the objections of the indigenous community. The biodiversity and health of the Lacondon rainforest is depending on the Zapatisitas taking a stand against the Mexican government..

As a supporter of the Zapatistas, I suppose you're not a part of the War is Not the Answer crowd.
You don't have a principled opposition to war, if you support a group dedicated to the violent overthrow of the government. You just have opposition to our operations in Iraq and Afghanistan because you support dictatorships and despots and don't want to see them overthrown.
Its okay, you can admit it. The Left supported Stalin, Mao, Ho, Pol Pot, Castro and even Hitler, until he screwed Stalin!
rocky-
I understand your concerns but you should know that the Zapatistas, although indeed do have arms, have not fired a single shot in over ten years. The majority of the Zapatistas in Chiapas are civilians who have no connection to the tiny "army" of the EZLN, and these same civilians have been constructing democratic institutions from scratch in a region that has been plagued by violence and feudalism for 500 years.
The left didn't support Hitler. Hitler was going after the Communists.
The Zapatistas don't seek the violent overthrow of the government as you say. They want to create a zone where they can create an alternate government. It's a very different thing from seizing state power.
The Zapatists are not "pacifists" in any sense, but they do identify themselves as opposed to the 500 year tradition of invasion and imperialism to which the government of Mexico belongs. To that end, they wish to move society beyond the wars and cultural destruction that are virtually guaranteed by that tradition.
Just like they wanted to appease Saddam. It wouldn't matter to them if Hitler was gassing every Jew in Germany as long as we had "peace".
Same old crap.
Some people just never learn.
