The Human Rights Committee of UTLA and the Coalition Against Militarism in Our Schools present a take-action workshop "Stopping Militarism in our Schools" on Saturday, February 7th, from 10AM - 2 PM, at Manual Arts High School, 4131 Vermont Ave., Los Angeles. A panel featuring counter-recruitment activist Rick Jahnkow, Military Families Speak Out representative Fernando Suarez del Solar, and students from Manual Arts HS will address concerns about military recruiting and training on high school campuses. Following the panel, breakout discussion groups will tackle ASVAB military career testing, the poverty draft, conflict resolution lessons K-12, and provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act that require schools to submit student names and addresses to military recruiters unless parents OPT OUT in writing. Breakout groups will also discuss JROTC and California Cadet Corps, military training programs that indoctrinate youth and glorify war. Network, organize, and mobilize to stop the military invasion of our public schools. Learn what teachers, students, parents, and other school stakeholders can do to "Stop Militarism in our Schools." Free parking will be available. Registration is $5.00. Lunch can be purchased at the event. For more information, contact: Arlene Inouye,aginouye@aol.com or Andy Griggs, AndyCA6@aol.com
