Clark Kerr was an economic conservative who supported free speech. (This is according to the story - activists from the era would probably disagree.) This teacher, who was widely reviled by campus radicals, was the target of an FBI campaign to destroy him, because of his moderate politics. The Hoover FBI was one of the most corrupt, conservative abusers of government power in recent memory.
