Award-winning journalist John Pilger investigates America's 'war on terror' in this powerful documentary following the events of September 11th , which sees him filming in Afghanistan and the United States and

acquiring previously unseen material from Iraq.

Two years ago, as the bombs began to drop, George Bush promised Afghanistan 'the generosity of America and its allies'. Now, the familiar old warlords are regaining power, religious fundamentalism is renewing its grip and military skirmishes continue routinely. In "liberated" Afghanistan, America has its military base and pipeline access, while the

people have the warlords who are, says one women, "in many ways worse than the Taliban".

Whilst in Washington, Pilger conducts a series of remarkable interviews, including senior Bush officials and former intelligence officers. A former senior CIA official also tells Pilger that the whole issue of

weapons of mass destruction was "95 per cent charade". An investigation of files and archive film for “Breaking The Silence”, together with interviews with former intelligence officers and senior Bush officials have revealed that Bush and Blair knew all along that Saddam Hussein was effectively disarmed.

Both Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, and Condoleezza Rice, President Bush's closest adviser, made clear before September 11 2001 that Saddam Hussein was no threat - to America, Europe or the Middle East.In Cairo, on February 24 2001,

Powell said: "He (Saddam Hussein) has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbours."

As President Bush refers to the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq as two 'great victories', Pilger asks the question - victories over whom and for

what purpose? Pilger describes Afghanistan as a country "more devastated than anything I have seen since Pol Pot's Cambodia". He finds that Al-Qaida has not been defeated and that the Taliban is re-emerging. And of the 'victory' in Iraq, he asks: "Is this Bush's Vietnam?" Pilger raises searching

questions about the real motives of the 'war on terror'.
