Pilgrimage for Human Rights!
March From Claremont to Los Angeles
The Latino Roundtable, a coalition of community-based organizations and individuals in the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Valley, will hold a pilgrimage march for Human Rights from Our Lady of Assumption Church in Claremont to Los Angeles beginning on December 4th and ending on December 7th. The purpose of the march is for the purpose of expressing our support for SB 60, the Driver's license law. We believe that the current law SB60 is good public policy allowing all drivers regardless of immigration status to obtain a driver's license and buy auto insurance, which will make our roads and highways safer. This law recognizes the contributions that immigrants make to California. We are disappointed by the sudden turn of events to repeal this law. With his leadership in the repeal of the Driver's license law, Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger is writing another shameful chapter of nativism and political irresponsibility in California history. His actions to repeal this law are part of a beginning attack on immigrants, the poor, the elderly, workers of all colors, and all those who are at the lower levels of the stratification ladder. It is no coincidence that the same day that the Schwarzennegger administration led the drive to repeal a bill that would have helped immigrants and the well being of working families, it is taking the lead in proposing $3.8 billion in budget cuts - budget cuts that will affect food stamp eligibility, reduce fees to doctors who treat medi-cal patients, and do way with various outreach programs in higher education - budgets cuts that will cut $282 million to the 600,000 or so developmentally challenged; $385 million to the elderly to help keep them out of nursing homes - resulting in an estimated 742,000 people losing their care; and $77 million that will include cuts to the program Health families that provides health care for children of the working poor. We want to make it clear that our coalition will continue to work for a law that accomplishes our goals of safe roads, gives all Californians the right to a driver's license, and defends the human rights of the immigrant population. We will continue to work for a law that is inclusive, non-discriminatory, and is developed with the full voice of our coalitions. Our Pilgrimage march is part of an ongoing effort to send a message to Governor Shwarzenegger and his Republican allies that we will not stand for solving the economic crisis in this state on the backs of the poor, the unemployed, and the elderly - and that immigrants as well as all working people have the right to good employment, a living wage, affordable health care, quality education, and safe roads.
A coalition of students, workers, and community individuals/groups will be marching from Claremont to Los Angeles in support of Human Rights and to advocate that the economic crisis not be placed on the backs of immigrants, students, the elderly, and the poor. The march is taking place as part of commemorating International Human Rights Day. For us, human rights is not just about immigrant workers having the right to a driver's license -- it is also about the right to a good job, decent health care, and a quality environment. We will be marching for no cutbacks in service -- and that immigrants not be scapegoated for the state of the economy. We will leave Claremont on the 4th and arrive in Los Angeles on the 7th. Please join us for all four days or along the march route.
