Endorse passwords for users!

by @ Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 12:07 AM

From the comments page: "This feature has been disabled temporarily pending discussion about how to deal with the flamewars happening on the website. Current discussion within the collective is pointing toward adding users and passwords to create greater accountability for each of the participants. "

This is a good idea. While some may claim that it prevents them from making truly anonymous posts, the reality is that true anonymity does not exist on the net. Since it doesn't really exist, why pay the price of pretending that it does? The newswire would be far more effective if irresponsible individuals could be banned. This would not be censorship. There is nothing to prevent the irresponsible from creating their own forums, even for free. Liberty is not a matter of wiping your muddy feat inside your neighbor's house.

But Steve...

by nonanarchist Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 1:34 AM

"The newswire would be far more effective if irresponsible individuals could be banned."

But who gets to decide who's irresponsible and therefore banned?

And what if they decide YOU should be banned? Will you support their decision?

"This would not be censorship."

Sure it would. Don't you guys yell "Censorship!" when you're banned from conservative boards? Or indeed when people don't even just listen to you?

Would I be Banned

by JJ the Republican Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 2:17 AM

As a conservative republican and support Bush my views would be banned. Is not the purpose if indy media to be colored blind as to peoples views? Even though I do not agree with almost any of the views presented on indy media. I do enjoy reading it to broaden my understanding of how the other side thinks. Without debate and freedom to post whatever is in anyone's mind indy media will become another Fox News or CNN. And I do not think anyone whant's this to occur.

FYI

by fresca_yye54 Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 2:31 AM

Passwords won't go any further to giving the "kollektive" the ability to ban than they already have with IP data.

That is to say that, if anyone really wants to post here, it's easily done.

Nice to watch a dead man walking especially when it's kobe. All the aliases are those folks and by gum they are being push out just as the Wooden Soldiers pushed the Boogey Men back in to Boogey Land. So long suckers.

It's a great insight

by Barney Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 3:35 AM

We're seeing here in microcosm what the people of the USSR, eastern Europe experienced every day of their lives, in every facet of their lives. The people of Cuba and N Korea still do, I'm sure that will change soon.

Yakov Smirnov joke:

by nonanarchist Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 3:44 AM

"Is only two TV channels in Russia.

First channel is Soviet propaganda.

Second channel is KGB saying, 'Turn back to other channel!'"

Wanna see something really funny? Check the main page:

"Indymedia fights Diebold's legal attempt to silence discussions about e-voting"

Hee hee! Man, they can't even see the irony...or the sheer hypocrisy...in this.

There is NO issue here.

by PJ Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 4:08 AM

The trolls are not here to debate they are here to stop us in our tracks. They can't debate any of their so called point because you need magical thinking to believe anything they say. But the best thing to say is Later Bye.

Au contraire, PJ.

by nonanarchist Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 5:11 AM

I beg to differ.

When I first came here, I attempted to debate the issues, using facts, logic, and credible sources.

I was immediately pasted with profanities and insults such as "paid shill" and "Brown Shirt".

No one offered reasonable rebuttal to my arguments; just obscenity and hate.

If you want debate, I'm perfectly willing.

So far, I've had no takers here.

no doors, no windows

by yawn Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 5:55 AM

There is no way to open a closed mind reading from a script furnished by a PR agency. These riech tards would never admit the truth even if they fell face first into it.

It's not in the script. There is no use trying to debate with them, that's not why they're here. Even after suffering numerous blows to their 'arguments' they cannot acknowledge the other point of view.

This one who calls itself nonanarchist has never admitted or conceded to the avalanche of facts or historical documents presented to it.

Ever.

It's a waste of time to even try.

Isn't that right, Skippy?

Yawn

by nonanarchist Sunday, Nov. 09, 2003 at 4:17 PM

The fact that you perceive those who disagree with you as brainwashed script-readers proves my point exactly.

Thanks.
