Lori is played by actress Sharon Stone and Quaid is played by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Well total recall it was here today in the Golden State of California.
Flanked by his wife Maria Shriver and his quasi mother-in-law, Eunice Mary Kennedy Shriver, sister to JFK, Bobby and Teddy, Arnold declared victory in West Los Angeles based on exit poll predictions coming in over the Associated Press newswire before California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley could formally declare that Governor Gray Davis had been recalled from office and replaced with science fiction actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But the Associated Press is always there first.
Gandhi once said,
“I suppose that when I go to the Hereafter and stand at the Golden Gate, the first person I shall meet will be a correspondent of the Associated Press.”
In California, it is hard to discern where the fantasy world of Hollywood stops and the Golden State starts.
It seems that all of California is Mister Rogers’ proverbial “world of make believe.”
Two days ago, I went out to the beach in Marin County with a friend of mine who I have known since Montessori School.
Paul Verhoeven filmed several scenes for his film “Basic Instinct” on location in Marin County.
On our way back from the beach to back to break the fast at the end of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, in almost exclusively Jewish Berkeley we drove down Lucas Valley Road and passed George Lucas’ “Skywalker Ranch,” the home of Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic, the world’s leading special effects company.
Eventually we reached Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, named for the first white man to land in Marin County, a pirate and aristocratic soldier of fortune who was so effective at fighting the Spanish “Armada” that he was knighted as a member of the English nobility.
On the final approach to the San Rafael Bridge, which crosses the San Francisco Bay between Marin County and Berkeley, we passed the California Department of Corrections San Quentin Facility, home to Bobby’s Kennedy’s Palestinian assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, and home to California’s one and only gas chamber.
“I don’t think there is much chance that California is going to be getting rid of the death penalty any time soon,” I said to my friend.
“Not with ‘The Terminator’ as our new governor,” my friend replied.
The London “Sunday Times,” the paper that in 1986 turned Israeli nuclear physicist Mordechai Vanunu and exposed to the world that the State of Israel has the capability to erase every population center in Europe with more than 100,000 people from the map in less than 8 minutes has dubbed Schwarzenegger “The Governator.”
Paul Verhoeven’s film “Total Recall” was based on the science fiction novel “We Can Remember it For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.
(I would like to note that Verhoeven’s most recent film, “Starship Troopers,” is a must see outrageous over-the-top send up of the completely militarized State of Israel.)
P. K. Dick, who also wrote the stories from which the screenplays for “Blade Runner” and “Minority Report” were adapted did his writing not far from where I am writing in our family home in the Berkeley Hills, exactly opposite the Golden Gate.
I can see why P. K. Dick wrote science fiction in California.
California is as science fiction as it gets.
New York Jewish intellectuals (redundant) are questioning whether the people of California, with an economy that has eclipsed that of all but 6 industrialized nations, have lost all touch with reality in the world of make believe that the 600,000 Hollywood Jews have created.
After New York City and Tel Aviv, Los Angeles is the third largest Jewish metropolis in the world.
