Dear Flor y Canto Supporters,
We have some sad news to report to you. A few days ago, Flor y Canto was held up and robbed. I'll refrain from getting into the details about the robbery, but needless to say, it wasn't pleasant. Aside from the unnecessary and unfortunate distress it caused to the people that were in attendance, the fucking bastard made out with an important chunk of the money we use to pay our monthly rent.
What really sucks is that now we're squeezed to figure out how we are going to make up the difference, since the first of the month is rolling around in about a week. That's where hopefully some of you out there come in! As many of you know, Flor y Canto has been self-sufficient for a long time now, always just barely getting by on book sales, donations, and internet access. We are an all volunteer space, absolutely nobody gets paid (we don't even get free drinks!) and the little money that comes our way, just goes into keeping this space open. We provide a very real and significant resource to our local community and beyond, a public forum to chill, discuss, play, and often, learn. If any of you out there can help us pull through this mess, we could really use your help right now. Please consider sending us a contribution at the address below, or come by and purchase some books.
On a much more exciting note, Jennifer and Ross are taking over for Film Night and they are starting things off with a bang with a showing this Friday 9/26 of Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" You know it's gonna be good! Here's their info:
***************************************************************
Our first Friday Night Film will be Academy Award winning, Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore. Join us this Friday, 9/26, at 7:30 for a potluck feast, the movie will roll about 8:30.
Jennifer (and Ross)
...and click on the petition link below if you want to stop the sale of ammunition at Wal-Mart.
Bowling for Columbine written, produced and directed by Michael Moore
"Bowling for Columbine" is an alternately humourous and horrifying film about the United States. It is a film about the state of the Union, about the violent soul of America. Why do 11,000 people die in America each year at the hands of gun violence? The talking heads yelling from every TV camera blame everything from Satan to video games. But are we that much different from many other countries? What sets us apart? How have we become both the master and victim of such enormous amounts of violence? This is not a film about gun control. It is a film about the fearful heart and soul of the United States, and the 280 million Americans lucky enough to have the right to a constitutionally protected Uzi.
Take Action against Wal-Mart's sale of bullets, from the Michael Moore website:
Sign the "Wal-Mart Is Nothing Without Its Customers" Petition. Bullets have no place at the world's largest corporation. We call on Wal-Mart to immediately stop the sale of handgun ammunition. Until Wal-Mart does this, we pledge to never again shop at Wal-Mart. Too many people have already died. Wal-Mart must remove this merchandise before anyone else is added to the list. Click on this link to sign the petition or learn more:

I know, I know, it's annoying when people ask for money, that's why we rarely do it. But we could really use that little bit of extra help right now and I know many of you would like to lend a hand. Take Care. -Tiburcio, for Flor y Canto

The above corporation is in Tucson. Given KOBE's pattern, someone should investigate whether they are also tied to the "Traitors of Tucson" project:

Hi. This is probably not the forum to post a personal ad, but in many
ways it is. My name is Steve. I'm 32 years old. I've had my depression
under control for three years now. By and large, I no longer consider
depression a major problem in my life, however I would like to meet a
woman who has shared the experience of depression. Depression is the one
side of my existence that I can never bridge between myself and those who
have never been there. I'm searching for a woman who has been there and
successfully done something about, between the ages of 21 and 35,
attractive, intellectual, affectionate, and not codependant (living
within reasonable distance of the Boston area. As for myself, I am
attractive, very intelligent, well educated, and adventurous. I have a
degree in computer science and am finishing a degree in Philosophy in
June. I'm currently working as a computer scientist in one university
and studying in another. My goal in life is to obtain a doctorate in
Philosophy and teach in a university. If you're interested please drop
me line at:
sdevoy@tufts.edu
If you're pissed off that I would put an ad here, please seek help.
People are more important than rules and conformity is boring.
Steve.
