Move over you Islamic extremists dreaming of 40 virgins in heaven, we got Christian extremism right here in the good ole' U.S.A.
STARKE, Fla. - An unrepentant Paul Hill boasted Tuesday on the eve of his execution for the shotgun slaying of an abortion doctor: "I expect a great reward in heaven."
Barring an unlikely last-minute stay, the 49-year-old former minister will be put to death by lethal injection Wednesday evening for the 1994 murders in Pensacola of Dr. John Britton and his escort. Hill has not appealed. He will be the first person executed in the United States for anti-abortion violence.
In a jailhouse interview, Hill suggested the state will be making a martyr out of him.
"The sooner I am executed ... the sooner I am going to heaven," he said. "I expect a great reward in heaven. I am looking forward to glory. I don't feel remorse."
"More people should act as I have acted," Hill added.
Abortion-rights groups worry that Hill's execution will trigger reprisals by those who share his steadfast belief that violence to stop abortion is justified. Several Florida officials connected to the case received threatening letters last week, accompanied by rifle bullets.
Gov. Jeb Bush, who was named in one of those threatening letters, said Tuesday the threats would not keep him from carrying out the law.
"I'm not going to be bullied," Bush said.
Bush also said: "I'm not going to change the deeply held views that I have on (the death penalty) because others have deeply held views that disagree.
"I totally respect them. And they should respect what the rule of law is here in our state."
Death penalty opponents have also pointed to the prospect of violence as a reason to stop this execution in particular.
"We're very concerned that Paul Hill's call for violence may be picked up by any person to whom God speaks," said Abe Bonowitz, the head of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. "That could be prevented. It should be."

I think that religion is the problem. Extreme views give extreme reactions. If this guy was a Muslim, we would all be thinking quite differently.

Religion is not the problem. Because some people misuse it does not make it bad. The same knife you use to butter your bread can be used to kill someone. It's all in what you do with it.

for the weak-minded. it's kind of a necessary evil for people whose morality can only be fixed by extrinsic motivation. in other words, the average person cannot rise above his/her self-preserving nature to be altruistic, so religion is a good way to get the majority of the population to be good people ("be nice, or you'll go to hell"). of course, this is definitely an example of it getting out of hand.

We've got an idea to get people to join us in our movement. We'll take certain subjects, especially ones that are held near and dear by many members of the working class, and then we'll make light of it. We'll spit in the face of the working class. Yeah! Sure I do, without even looking. There are various North Koreans and other communists there, burying weapons of mass destruction just like the ones they buried in Iraq. When the time is right they are going to threaten to launch them at Orange County, the Nixon and Reagan Libraries, the television lot where the Donna Reed Show was filmed, and the National Football Hall of Fame in Ohio unless prayer in the public schools is abolished, gay marriage legalized, workers at Walmart are allowed to join unions and get overtime pay, and employees at Ford plants are allowed to use the restroom more than twice a day. Those dastards will stop at nothing; if these demands are granted they plan to ask for free medical care as a human right and for restoration of the estate tax.

You can always expect them to be both mean-spirited and self-contradictory. They are in favor of abolishing the minimum wage or at least in keeping in too low for workers who do not get benefits to afford private health insurance. But they are also against free medical care as a human right on the grounds that anyone but a loser should be able to afford private health insurance. Just as they defend the lay-off of workers by both private and public employers, with corresponding speed-up and forced overtime for the other workers. And then they argue that anyone unemployed is a loser too lazy or incompetent to support themselves. The underlying assumption is all too clear - low-income working people are trash who deserve what they get (close to nothing) while the rich and the well-to-do are superior beings.

"free medical care is accepted as a natural human right by the majority of the population. "
This is utter nonsense. Nowhere is there free healthcare. The countries that have any paln of socialized medicine have MASSIVE tax rates. Nothing's free. These countries simply FORCE people to buy their insurance from the state in the form of taxation. Where is it that you think all this "free" medical care comes from? Do you actually think that there are just scores and scores of doctors who provide absolutely free service?
You are simply an ass who is incapable of thinking beyond surface buzzphrases.
Furthermore, in almost all of these countries that provide "free" health care (Canada and Ireland are the ones I have first hand knowledge of) most people opt to buy their own private health coverage since the states coverage is a beauracratic nightmare and offers obviously substandard medical service because there's no free market. Canadiens who need real care always come to America if able. It's the very lack of this "free" care that makes our health system so much better.
By all means, we need to deal with some major problems like the monumental cost of malpractice insurance which causes costs to consumers to skyrocket, but ultimately people are much better off when they are not forced BY THE STATE to buy FROM THE STATE.
by fresca
Sunday, Sep. 07, 2003 at 7:53 PM
You can always expect them to be both mean-spirited towards anyone who disagrees with them and self-contradictory. They are in favor of raisng the minimum wage to the point of forcing employers to have to lay off workers in order to afford to operate and provide health coverage.. But they are also for free medical care as a human right on the grounds that anyone who can afford their own insurance has a moral obligation to pay for the insurance of all those who can't afford it. Just as their utter lack of understanding of simple economic principles forces the lay-off of workers by both private and public employers, they also fail to see how this ultimately leads to the corresponding speed-up and forced overtime for the other workers. And then they argue that anyone employed and earning a comfortable living is a selfish rich loser too mean-spirited to support anyone who isn't working. The underlying assumption is all too clear - low-income working people are victims who deserve whatever they can get (virtually everything courtesy of the taxes paid by the few top income earners) while the rich and the well-to-do are thieves who somehow made their fortune conspiraring against the poor and not from any real work of their own.

I hate to say it, but the whole lot of you are amazingly stupid. To somehow think that there is a connection between Iraq and the fact that socilaized medicine is a crock of shit is inane. We are spending Billions in Iraq because that's how much it costs to fight a successful and obviously much needed (and far to belated) war and to stabilize the situation afterward. Money well spent.
If we hadn't spent a cent on ANY war ever, we still wouldn't (I would hope) have socialized medicine. We are taxed enogh as it is without the government forcing us to buy insurance from them AND pay for the insurance of others. Health Care IS NOT the responsibility of the government to provide.

Clearly you know very little about making money
If you don't understand you need to spend money to make money, it explains why you don't have enough
We almost spent over a trillion dollars, in the Marshall plan (thank god Mr. Burns didn't give them the money) helping "others outside or borders". Rest assured we made it back, therefor helping others you can help yourself.
By the way a complete heath care system, would cost yearly, about 10x what we have spent on the war and what we will spend rebulding Iraq. Government speding uses big numbers. 14.5 million for new toilet seats alone. (thankfully they are white toilet seats)

generally speaking government expenditure is not be a zero sum game. If it is then you are doing it wrong.
for example if you pay for police or a judicial system the logic is that it pays for itself because without them your system will not function properly. ie it is an investment.
Expenditure on education and some types of healthcare is an investment in human capital. And a functioning welfare system would have negligable discouragement from working while allowing people to remain fit and educated and trained to re enter the workforce.
Similiarly for a clear example military expenditure on fighting the AXIS was nessercary in order to prevent even worse more expesive war (if they had waited). A similar argument could be made for the Iraq war.

Where in the Constitution does it say that a corporation like Microsoft or IBM has the right to be treated treated like a human being? Nowhere; the courts have simply chosen to interpret the 14th Amendment in a manner that gives corporations this right. A much better case could be made that the Preamble to the Consitution, which charges the Federal Government with promoting the general welfare, is quite consistent with a government-run, single payer insurance and medical care system. In any event, I doubt very many nations that have national health services (most of the industrialized nations on earth) have constitutions that specifically tell the government to run a public health system. Probably none have constitutions stating that the government should license airline pilots, either - but it is probably a good idea nonetheless.

>A much better case could be made that the Preamble to the Consitution, which charges the Federal Government with promoting the general welfare, is quite consistent with a government-run, single payer insurance and medical care system.
The founding fathers wrote the Constitution to limit government, and here you are wanting to expand it over approx. one-seventh of the US economy.
BTW, should the government ever go to universal healthcare, if it doesn't start out making all doctors federal employees, it will. Since the government is the payer, all costs will be fixed, all procedures will be government mandated, and if the doctors screw up and you end up damaged or dead, you won't be able to sue, because it'll be written in such a way where you can't sue the government. They cut off the wrong leg during surgery, tough!! Tell it to the hand!!
Anarchy is far superior to liberalism. At least in anarchy, you don't have big government managing your life from cradle to grave. In anarchy, there is no Affirmative Action and there is no single-payer healthcare, which automatically qualifies it as superior to your liberal/socialist/communist world.

I bet you will say the same thing if you are lying in the street bleeding afte being hit by some libertarian who doesn't believe in obeying traffic lights. Or if you develop a detached retina and need an operation within weeks to avoid going blind - you will probably say to hell with it - I'll still have one eye and besides, where does it say in the Constitution that people have a right to see? Yes, affirmative action is terrible; I bet that scores of unqualified Blacks and women have gotten jobs or been admitted to universities for which you were obviously qualified because of your powerful intellect.

Meyer...what in the hell are you going on about now?
Are you actually going nuts or are you trying to dodge again.
To answer your question about Microsoft, whatever the hell that has to do about anything....NOWHERE.
The constitution makes no provision for what you describe. You are correct.
So what?
Health care is still not a right and people shouldn't be forced to provide it for others. If YOU think that people should recieve free healthcare than why don't YOU form a private charity and YOU raise money and YOU buy insurance for all the poor oppressed masses. Leave me out of it.

Come off it, Fresca baby, don't tell us that you don't realize that the Constitution says, in many cases, what the courts read into it. Corporations like Microsoft and IBM could not exist if the courts did not give a highly creative reading to the 14th Amendment and claim that corporations have the same rights as individual human beings. Justifying universal healthcare under the Preamble's general welfare statement doesn't even require any creative interpretations. Have you been out in the sun too long digging in the Bekka Valley? How's it coming with the wmd search?

For what it's worth, I couldn't agree with you more about (well I could agree a little more probably) the handouts Corporations get and the special treatment and tax breaks afforded them.
So what. You are talking apples and oranges.
Here's the bottom line. My feelings about Social Health care in a nutshell.
I don't want the government controlling health care when I need it and being forced to pay exhorbident taxes for substandard beuracracy addled service.
Furthermore, I don't want to have to pay the cost of your insurance either. You want it? You pay for it.

i hope you never have to face not having health insurance, not because you are lazy and refuse to work, but because you either lose your job, or your employer does not see fit to give you enough hours for you to qualify for his/her health plan. if a working class person has to choose between food/rent and a health insurance premium, which do you think he/she will pay?
also, i have talked to many europeans and canadians about their socialized health care systems. yes, it sucks to have a high tax burden to subsidize public services. but they invariably say that they are glad that the service exists for the poor, the down and out, and the unlucky. besides, you could always buy your own health care if you can afford it, so you would not necessarily have to use the public service.
and, please don't remind me that if you do make enough money to purchase your own healthcare (or your employer provides it) you would still be throwing tax money into the common pot for everyone else to use. we already do that anyway -- think about interstate highways, research and development grants for industry and academia, and yes, even gigantic military contracts and outlays. we crazy lefties are not too enthused about that particular use of tax dollars.
bottom line is: ya gotta live and let live! you can have your B2 bomber; I would rather be able to tell a poor inner city dweller dying of diabetes that he or she can get free dialysis treatment. consider it.

>In anarchy single-payer healthcare would not exists. You could probably shorten that and say that healthcare wouldn't exist.
True, and another reason why anarchy is far superior to liberalism/socialism/communism/marxism.
>and besides, where does it say in the Constitution that people have a right to see?
Exactly. It doesn't. There are no guarantees in life. You didn't know that?
Completely ridiculous that you libs believe that big brother needs to take care of you from cradle to grave, yet you decry other things the government does saying it imposes upon your freedom. You haven't begun to understand having your freedom imposed upon until you have single-payer government controlled healthcare. The government gets involved with healthcare, they're going to know more about you than you can possibly know. You know how nosey the government is, and it'll be even more-so. You might try and stop it, and believe there are safeguards in place, but it won't work. If the government's flipping the bill, then they are going to demand satisfaction for what they paid for, and that includes your medical records and your private conversations with your government paid doctor.
>I bet that scores of unqualified Blacks and women have gotten jobs or been admitted to universities for which you were obviously qualified because of your powerful intellect.
I never given it a consideration because it's not worth it, and I don't really care. In anarchy, there won't be any AA, the playing field will be level, and if a bunch of white people decide to form a collective where people of color are excluded, or vice versa, then their will be no government to complain to and no one to tell them they can't. That is far superior to liberalism where people are awarded not on merit but on the concept of "getting even" and "diversity". Before I would allow liberalism to become the rule of the day, I'll gladly join the anarchists in ridding the world of all government.

beyond the fact that you couldn't resist the idea that I'm somehow in favor of trading healthcare for armaments, you raise some ggod points.
Actually, maybe you just communicated the same points in a better way. In any case, i do hear what you're saying and I do consider it.
I'm still against the idea of full socialized medicine but I agree that those who can't even begin to afford healthcare need to be helped.
So what's the solution?

I would just like it to be known that I am "smashtheleft" and that I enjoy making an idiot out of myself everyday on this website by posting commentary that explains my asinine belief that the only rights you are entitled to have to be explicitly documented in the Constitution. However, since I have never even read the damn thing, I know not what I am talking about. I'm much too simpleminded to understand the civilized world. I'm a conservative.

"patient & ml by Dr. (when) The government gets involved with healthcare, they're going to know more about you than you can possibly know." The government IS ALREADY INVOVLED WITH HEALTHCARE, so what do you mean by "is going to know". ?
WE ARE NOW REQUIRED BY LAW to sign away our rights and allow our doctors to give ALL OF OUR PERSONAL MEDICAL INFORMATION to Law Enforcement....
They refused to sell me my medication (that I need to live) at my pharmacy this year without signing my rights away.
However the Government, along with the majority of Big Brother Corporations, refuse affordable healthcare. So I pay for it myself, as I have been my entire life.
So why the fuck does the Government need MY MEDICAL INFO? To help them ejaculate to their oppression of the country?
I guess I can always purchase my meds for 1/3 of the price the SAME PHARMASEUDICAL CO'S ARE SELLING from Mexico. Oh.....wait a minute, Big Brother is now brainwashing us that foreign internet meds are poisoned by terrorists!
Oh well, I guess I'll have to go back to purchasing the economically affordable natural medication....marijuana. Oops, I'm a terrorist now.
At least Hitler admitted he wanted the disabled dead.
Anyone who thinks the Constitution isn't being trampled upon by the (Anthing-but)Patriot Acts is brainwashed.
Making sure that big government cannot have control over people's lives is not even up for debate. It would be better to have no government at all.
