Truth must come out
July 1, 2003
President Bush wouldn’t give U.N. inspectors time to look for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He claimed to know exactly where they were. He called the inspectors incompetent. He rushed on to war.
Since then, front-page claims of WMD have, one by one, turned into back-page admissions of vacuum cleaners and balloon inflators.
Meanwhile, Bush’s war is still killing one American soldier per day, even if his defense secretary calls that “insignificant.” While Bush turns his attention to campaign fund-raisers, military spouses and mothers are asking, “When will our soldiers come home?”
Time’s up. We need the truth on how Bush got us into this mess.
I propose an inspection team to look for evidence of mass deception, going straight into the White House, the Pentagon, even the presidential compound in Crawford.
We should not expect cooperation, given Bush’s history of contempt for international law and our Constitution. Just look how long he has defied subpoenas for the energy task force records. His administration even refuses to reveal names of prisoners, in defiance of international norms.
No, we need aggressive inspections to unmask Bush’s lies. To head the team, I nominate Dr. Hans Blix.
