PayPal = SpyPal

by C/O Diogenes Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 7:47 PM

PayPal is not your buddy. It is another corrupt Corporate Suck-up. Please do not use PayPal.

PayPal = SpyPal

Submitted by: Anonymous "Ha'aretz reports that eBay, which now owns PayPal, making the combined firm the largest online financial intermediary, considers your purchases, home address, and credit data an open book. Call it SpyPal. Forget about privacy policies. Forget about court orders. Forget about "unreasonable searches and seizures." This is the new Amerika. Are you a law enforcement type with questions for some SpyPal customer? No problem, SpyPal will field your questions through its customer support staff. The target will never know he is being questioned by law enforcement. Are you a national security spook constructing a database of dissidents and political targets? No problem, SpyPal will cross-reference credit card data with home addresses and online video purchases. You need nothing more than a fax to our office for a comprehensive list of all customers who purchased 9-11 cover-up videos through PayPal.

Mindful of these immoral cave-ins to what passes for law enforcement these days, many video producers, book sellers, and magazine editors are considering the Digital Monetary Trust as an alternative mechanism for fee collection. This service provides guaranteed anonymity. Not even DMT staff can decipher the encrypted financial transactions. In days of Thought Crime, DMT is a wise move for everyone on the web.

Didn't catch all the shit at the top. My apologies.

ID

by Ryan Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 8:02 PM

How terrible! Next, doctors will be wanting to know the medical history of my siblings, my parents and their siblings and grandparents in order to "assist" me (wink, wink) with my medical well being. This simply must stop before we are all one walking ID card complete with bar codes tatooed on our inner bottom lip.

Ryan = Shill

This clown is a real riot.

What a moron.

Now calm down

by fresca Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 10:46 PM

Now what's all the problem with Paypal?

The original post doesn't really fully explain the problem inherent with Paypal.

Maybe Paypal IS to be avoided, but could someone please be a little more informative than a phony dialogue and the oft used "k" in "amerika" as a quick way to signify something nefarious?

I'm seriously asking. All database driven commerce sites could and probably would supply this info. What makes Paypal so much worse?

90% of comments here are posted by about 3 shills.

by Mary Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 11:05 PM

These three shills use about 10 different names and post to themselves through proxies. We know who they are.

By the way, Ned Lyle, Fuck You.

That's it?

"

That's your attempt at discussion Mary?

Now who's spamming?

Fresca, you bitch, I don't post enough to consider it spam.

by Mary Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 11:20 PM

You, on the other hand, are either a shut-in glued to the net, a slacker using her boss' machine, or a paid shill.

Actually

by fresca Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 11:34 PM

I'm not a she AND I regularly work about 12 hours a day, nowhere near a computer. Do a little search and find out any posts I've made during the day in the last couple of weeks or so.

Mary, you are simply an angry fool who can't respond to any discussion.

Stay quiet.

You'll eventually wind up embarrassing yourself.

by Sy$TeMF@iLuRe Saturday, Jun. 21, 2003 at 11:56 PM

Now ladies, kiss and make up.

Of course all americans should be concerned about

governmental snooping and the repeal of their fourth amendment rights.

But then again if you spend your whole life on a computer then it isnt too difficult to spy on a persons web habits, purchases, find out thier home address etc. (-'~`*,{!-+*~})

But i think it is important that people are aware of these infringements on their constitutional rights.

Shut the fuck up, Enrique.

real comment, not troll spam

by jack Sunday, Jun. 22, 2003 at 4:27 AM

I found it odd that Paypal decided to stop payment services for adult items about two months ago. What would be a more ideal way to add to the smear-capable data than to continue to data warehouse smut purchases?

In any event, fresca, sometimes you really come off as a total nut. I mean, even if you have hardline rightwing views, even a rightwinger can see the value of personal privacy. We don't like in a world where "if you've got nothing to hide you shouldn't be concerned." History is filled with a mountain of instances where power to spy is totally abused. It happened. It will happen.

It's kind of cute that you find such passion to hang around here so much.... for whatever reason. But sometimes you go so over the top it's quite revealing.

"I'm not a she AND I regularly work about 12 hours a day, nowhere near a computer"

I had a supervisor once who used to be a woman and Alex would get

so ANGRY when someone called it a she.

A beard helps. but not much, I hear....

by Phuktifino--the elusive pachyderm Sunday, Jun. 22, 2003 at 9:28 AM

Diogenes, it seems, is carrying the torch of 'hey, people, shouldn't we be worried that everyone is cooperating with the authorities?' and perhaps implicitly of 'Aren't we supposed to give them their authority? Did we give them authority to do this?'

When I say everyone I mean all those who are employed and make decisions in corporations. Including that corporation whore known as our government. Maybe I don't know enough but I can't imagine who is free: can George Tenet say something out of line? Is anybody safe to say "the truth"?

The myriad critics, it seems, are all huffed up, but huffed up in a good way. Huffed up with questions, like, "Is there any reason to worry that corporations are colluding with government, when we already know government is colluding with corporations?" (I think I know who's on top.)

The huffing extends to other adjacent fields of thought, such as: "Why would I worry, Diogenes, if people in government intelligence agencies are operating this way or that way? How, exactly, does this affect my way of life?"

I love you and all Fresca, I think you're great, but when I say way of life above, I am putting words into the mouths of some who are trying to preserve their lifestyle, and call it presrving their livelihood; those who can't see how throwing all suspicious persons in Guantanamo bay affects their civil liberties. "No, really, what is so worrysome about my civil liberties going away slowly? If I really sense that one is being taken away from me, I will just reach for it, really quickly like! Then everything will be cool, because

Wake the f*ck up. You wanna know what time it is? Check the date stamp on my post.

You wanna know what's going on in this world? It's the longest day in the world. Summer Solstice. Go out and enjoy. George Bush keeps calling Sharon a man of peace. Sharon keeps fucking the people who David enlisted with before rejoining his nation's camp, who enabled him with martial arts experience that he used to expand his empire. To get to the goddam pinnacle which Sharon is trying to recreate. Bush, the same thick dense Bush, is deciding national priorities in foreign policy, and what definition of what word he should use so he can strip you of your American citizenship. And why would he want to know more about you? So he can taylor his election ads to your demographic? Yeah, so to speak.

Let him gather all the information he wants! Knowledge is not power! If it was, knowledge would corrupt by corollary, right? Absolute knowledge--does that make you god? God? So you can put 33% of the population in jail, proportion your economics to a pyramid, and make sure Diogenes' detractors all get CD player/changer, DVD player, automobile on a four or five year lease, luxury apartment when they are young and house on 30-year mortgage when they are old, college education when saving from birth on a $70 grand a year salary, tell the voters (yes 'voters'; proud voters they are) what they think when the 'poll results' are released, and wake up one morning and you are the President of the United States and the God of Israel, because you are its economic lifeblood? That is what makes a God! THE God!

No, I mean it. Go out and enjoy the day. The Bible is just a metaphor. Islamic practice, belief in Christ, Judaic law, these things never changed a goddamm thing. When we find out what ratio of incarcerated to uncarcerated Black men makes the best return rates on renting the Lincoln bedroom in the White House, then we will be sane. Then, so to speak, our problems will be over.

Jiminy Crickets!

by fresca Sunday, Jun. 22, 2003 at 10:57 PM

I truly apologize for getting so many of you so upset by my question. I'm glad that so many of you took the time to actually read my post rather than just shoot your mouths off.

But, since no one answered, I'll ask it again.

What makes Paypal WORSE than any other ecommerce site.

Mind you I'm not defending them. There may be ample reason for me to join in on a boycott for all I know. The original post, however does not illustrate how Paypal is in any way different than thousands of other sites who would and do give up personal info to the just about anyone who asks, if the price is right.

Beyond the mispelling of "Amerika" the post simply states that Paypal might give up info as well.

C'mon. There must be more to it than that to warrant a whole thread.

I'm sincerely asking, what's the deal.

I don't want personal info available to anyone either, but what sets Paypal apart.

So please, can someone stop all the histrionics and answer a simple question?
