So much seems to be ending these days, reason notwithstanding. As creative intelligent Americans and other global citizens attempt to express their opinions and outrages at American neo-colonialism on sites such as this, a few individuals in need of impulse control medication and therapy seek to drown out reason with prevarications and empty generalizations. Obviously the stakes are high or these debilitated examples of human potential would not be here trying to drown out the reason of so many. Try as they might, however, I believe that each one of us knows that they are in the minority, and will not succeed in silencing us with tactics borrowed from the Gestapo and refined in the CIA and Pentagon. For if anything is true in these days of presidential lies and mass death orchestrations it is that the tiny all-white, bloodthirsty, homophobic, sexist, and fundamentalist group is in a retreat. Reason can only go so far to protect idiocy before it collapses in on itself.
In the same sense of endings, however, there is some significant and indelible changes occurring which may lead to a new potential for global survival. When two large forces of evil meet, as seems to be happening in the deserts south and arid plains north of Baghdad with the marshalling of American generals and politicos against the capitalist prodigal son Saddam Hussein, perhaps something good will happen. People are dying from American death weapons, Iraqi POWs are being tortured, children are being enveloped in flames of napalm -- there is no doubt of that. And we rational Americans are doing all that we can to stop the mad American locomotive of death and destruction. Sometimes due to the posturing of the paid shills of corporate America now attacking Indymedia perhaps some are feeling frustrated. Yet we must keep our eyes on the prize. And the prize is the survival of liberty and humanity. Our words and our protests are only a mirrored reflection of the truth that is sweeping the whole planet, that capitalism is death, that slavery is wrong, that environmental decimation is suicide, that American hegemony is as wrong and doomed to failure as Japanese aggression into Manchuria, that spending $400or 500 billion on death weapons while schoolchildren do not have safe schools and children are homeless in the streets of America is wrong, that access to clean water and self determination are essential rights for all inhabitants of the planet.
So when the right wing jingoistic accomplices to death and despair slam you, remember that you have the weight and reason of billions of humans who want a more just and equitable planet where American sponsored torture and factories are dim memories of the dark ages of Bush and his minions. Our collective humanity will always be stronger than their rude attempts to impose corporate fascism and racism. That is why they will continue to see their number shrink as ours enlarge. And as this happens, they will no doubt become even more irrational. They, after all, just refuse to treat the other inhabitants of this planet as equals and continue to view non-Americans as a resource to be used and disposed of as flippantly as one uses a styrofoam cup.
a Constitutional amendment which would open up the Constitution by the "usual suspects" - Corporate and establishment special interests trying to enshrine their power in perpetuity.
There is an Amendment that would be useful. Allowing Citizen's to mount a direct legal challenge, enforceable by the Court, to the Constitutionality of a law or government action. Right now the game is rigged so that an ordinary Citizen cannot mount a direct challenge if the government refuses to pay attention to Citizen's petitions.
Given the state of repression enacted by the current regime a constitutional convention will become a necessity sooner or later...unless you are willing to just give up and stick your head in the sands while power is continously consolidated into corporate and fascist hands...until this nation resembles something that no one wants.
I am not sure what reference you make to a constitutional amendment?
The first para - should have been "Constitutional Convention".. I was thinking ahead of what I was typing.
Gomenasai. Neh?
