CALL FOR 3/22 - HOLLYWOOD & VINE - WITNESSES TO DETENTION OF S.W. CORNER PROTESTORS!!!
On Saturday, March 22, 2003, just as the last few protesters in the intersection of Hollywood and Vine were being arrested, the police decided to clear people off of the sidewalks of the corners of the intersection. At about 4:00 p.m., they started with the southwest corner of Hollywood and Vine.
The police declared an unlawful assembly then told everyone to proceed southbound down the west side of Vine. As people began to move, the police then gathered behind the protesters and began to prod them with batons to make them move faster. As the last group of about 20 to 30 humans was clearing the corner, another group of police cut them off so that police were behind them and in front of them. Thus, the humans could not continue to move down the street as instructed. They were boxed in. Elderly people, parents and many children were in this group.
The humans were subsequently “detained,” forced to sit on the sidewalk, interviewed/registered (via FI Card) and let go. Footage and statements about these events are necessary for civil litigation (i.e. lawsuit). A court needs to remind the cops that they can’t arbitrarily declare assemblies unlawful and detain participants who are in the process of peacefully exercising their constitutional rights.
