Sonali Kolhatkar is the Vice President of The Afghan
Women's Mission, Host of The Morning Show on 90.7
KPFK, and a writer who has has written numerous
published articles.
The 1 1/2 hour teach-in will look at the "War on
Terrorism" that has been waged since 9/11 in
Afghanistan, and the current target Iraq. It will look
at how the goal of rooting out terrorism quickly
turned into one of liberating the Afghan people from
the Taliban. Once the hunt for Osama Bin Laden proved
more difficult that the Bush Administration imagined,
the target quickly became Iraq. The U.S is now on the
verge of launching a brutal war against the Iraqi
people, once more to liberate them through bombs.
Donald! Rumsfeld, US Defense Secretary has hailed
Afghanistan as a model for Iraq. What are the
implications of this for the people of Iraq? How will
this war affect the women of Iraq? and what does it
mean to be liberate a people through war? Sonali will
will attempt to answer these and more questions at the
teach-in.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC & ALL CAMPUS CLUBS
Tahmeena Faryal is one of the leading spokeswomen of
the Revolutionary Association of the Women of
Afghanistan (RAWA). She is in her twenties, very
eloquent and has a good grasp of English. In October
2001, Tahmeena testified in front of the Subcommittee
of the US House on International Operations and Human
Rights. Tahmeena was born in Afghanistan and raised
in Pakistani refugee camps. She joined RAWA at a young
age after attending a school run by RAWA members.
Today she travels around the world speaking out on
behalf of Afghan women and their rights. Tahmee na also
works on RAWA's various projects in Pakistani refugee
camps and
inside Afghanistan when she is not traveling.
The Revolutionary Association of the Women of
Afghanistan (RAWA) is the oldest political women's
organization in Afghanistan. RAWA was founded in 1977
and after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, they
joined the anti-Soviet resistance and rejected the
fundamentalist ideologies of the US-backed Mujahadeen.
RAWA also strongly denounced the Taliban and today
they reject the Northern Alliance who comprise much of
Afghanistan's government. RAWA has been at the
forefront of the Afghan women's movement - they
maintain that a secular and democratic government in
Afghanistan, which ensures the rights of women
alongside men, is the only solution for peace and
stability in their country. In addition to RAWA's
political work of organizing demonstrations and
political campaigns, RAWA also coo rdinates
humanitarian projects. These include the newlyopened Malalai Hospital
in Pakistan for Afghan
refugees, a sustainable farming project in Afghanistan
and scores of schools, orphanages, adult literacy
courses and income generating courses for Afghan women
and children. To find out more about RAWA, visit there
website at www.rawa.org.
Please invite anyone who might be interested and
forward this invitation freely (especially if you are
on any list-serves).

A teach-in about the inequalities between
first and third world countries.
April 2nd (Wednesday)
12PM - 1:30PM
Gymnasium (Room PE 200)
Saddleback College
Mission Viejo, California
Vandana Shiva will be speaking at Saddleback College
about the growing inequalities between first and third
world countries. What are the responsibilities first world
countries have to third world countries? Do we have any?
Have our activities contributed in any way to their conditions?
These are some of the questions Dr. Shiva will address
as well as the solutions on how we can create a global
democracy and smash the economic apartheid. Please
join us in examining the issues surrounding corporate
power, globalization, economic disparities, international
aid, and patent rights.
After the event, Dr. Shiva's books will be available for
sale for a special book signing.
