The Pistols introduced the world to UK punk, but it was the Clash who gave it relevance. DIY ethos, social justice, and anti-racist action defined Joe's being and that is what he should be remembered for. Many people forget that before there was Run DMC or Public Enemy, it was the Clash that introduced Rap and Jamaican Dub to White America. Joe Strummer and the Clash were the most important band of the 1970s and 1980s, bar none. Joe's death at such an early age sucks beyond belief, but the world is far better off for him having been here. Anyone who listens to the Clash's first album can hear the relevancy of the politics of the street. They matured to world commentary with London Calling and addressed issues ignored by the mainstream media with Sandinista!... Joe called the Clash's uncompromising practices "Stalinist"... but that was just dedication to their core beliefs... Check out the "Westway to the World" DVD by Don Letts and hear how insightful Joe Strummer was... A true legend is gone, but will never be forgotten.
