The left and mainstream media

by Karen Monday, Oct. 07, 2002 at 3:51 PM

The press release would be better if it was written as news.

Where is the mention of Iraq?

Where is a cell phone # for the media if they need to reach an organizer on the scene?

There seems to be a need for a media training on the lfet here in LA.

Maybe we should ask the folks at Media Allaince in SF to come down for a training.

bah

Are you in Jail ALREADY and waiting for us? hahahaah

The only person who's anti community is YOU.

People who speak against pointless violence are trying to save their countrymen from being targets of hate all around the world simply for being an american citizen.

5000 people marched today

by pb Monday, Oct. 07, 2002 at 11:23 PM

5000 people marched today at the Federal Building in Westwood to voice their opposition to US aggression against Iraq.

An incredibly diverse group of people marched peacefully today in opposition to President Bush's war against Iraq.

Young, old, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Anglo, Latino, veterans of previous wars, people of every ethnic group, men and women in suits, teenagers in shorts, famillies with children, in wheelchairs, with walkers, with canes, on skates, on their bicycles, on foot, everyone marched along Wilshire to the Army and ROTC headquarters then returning back to the grass at the Federal Plaza after listening to the many speakers opposing the war.

An ad-hoc marching band provided music and some dancing opportunities towards the middle of the line. Dancers in ethnic costumes with headresses and drummers performed too. A little punk rock action could be found along the grass. Drummers, banging drums for peace, could be found in small groups dispersed throughout.

The Green Party was well represented with the pro-tem Mayor of Santa Monica speaking on the official party platform that denounces Bush's proposed aggression against Iraq. (note: Democrats, while clearly represented in the marchers, did not take the opportunity to speak out in force as the Green Party did. Expect some dems to be jumping ship as this turns into a political issue in upcoming elections.)

Ron Kovic, the Vietnam vet of "Born on the 4th of July" spoke eloquently about war and what it really is about. He knows first hand the aftermath of war, he lost the ability to walk "serving my country".

Pro-Palestinian marchers carried posters and signs asking for the US to stop supplying Israel with arms, return to negotiations, and stop the occupation. (spotted the Jerusalem IMC icon of Hanthala held high as marchers moved along Wilshire.)

One great t-shirt spotted at the march: a sheep surrounded with the red circle and a diagonal line. Let's not be sheep and make it clear to Bush: Not in Our Name.

It was a great march and a great turn out. See you October 26th.
