NOON TODAY: UFW Rally in Downtown LA

by from the UFW Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 at 12:01 PM

TODAY - rally with the UFW at Governor Davis's LA office and urge him to sign SB 1736.

RALLY AT NOON TODAY!! THURSDAY, AUGUST 29

Governor Davis’s LA office

300 S. Spring St

Governor Davis thinks that since he has no viable opponent in the November election, he can turn his back on farmworkers and Latinos in California.

He's threatening to veto SB 1736, which would require growers to sit down at the bargaining table with the UFW when farmworkers vote in the union. For more than 25 years, almost 75% of growers whose workers voted for UFW representation have just refused to bargain in good faith with the union, so contracts didn't get signed. Pictsweet Mushrooms is only one of almost 300 companies dragging their feet to keep the union out.

SB 1736, which passed the Assembly 49-22 and the Senate 22-10, is the most important farm labor bill since 1975. Twenty-seven years after California's law granting them organizing rights was passed, 75% of state farm workers earn less than $10,000 per year and 90% have no health coverage, according to government figures. "This bill is about basic fairness for the poorest workers in California," UFW President, Arturo Rodriguez, says.
