Speak Out Against Intolerance on the Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee

Members vying for seats on the Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee are known homophobes, racists, and sexists. They're having a big laugh over this, and people who want to preserve the spirit and effectiveness of this board need to say "ENOUGH".

Subj: Speak Out Against Intolerance on the Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee!

PLEASE FORWARD TO OTHER LISTS

Come to the Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee meeting this Wednesday, August 28, to address the issue of intolerance and hatred among three of the eleven members of the committee.

Two months ago, community activists addressed the Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee after it was discovered that three committee members had said things that were hurtful and intolerant towards others.  At this meeting, they will address these concerns.

On an email list for Costa Mesa residents, Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee members Joel Faris and Janice Davidson called immigrants and people of color racists, dirty, and loud.  On the same email list, committee member Alan Mansoor forwarded anti-gay posts from Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council which claimed that gays are more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals and that gays are trying to create an agenda in schools that could send Christian students to rehabilitation.

All three of these people sit on the eleven member Costa Mesa Human Relations Committee, whose purpose is "to encourage the education about and communication between the various cultures residing in Costa Mesa. The Committee implements projects that will encourage the interaction, sharing, and understanding of each culture’s riches and seeks to be a catalyst for the resolution of issues that separate people in Costa Mesa."  (http://www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us/council/commissions/humanrel.htm)

When this issue was brought up at June's Human Relations Committee meeting, the three denied they said anything to hurt anyone, despite the room full of people who were hurt and offended by their emails.  In the last two months, these three have set out on a campaign to try to discredit residents who were offended by their emails, and have done nothing to acknowledge their emails were offensive, all the while serving on a committee whose purpose is "to be a catalyst for the resolution of issues that separate people in Costa Mesa."

Please come to the meeting and speak out against intolerance!
