1,000 LA Low-Income Family Members and
Supporters to Gather for Town Hall and March on
Welfare Reform Legislation Pending in Congress
Linda Chavez Thompson of AFL-CIO, Congresswomen Maxine Waters, Hilda Solis and Lucille Roybal-Allard & Others to Speak at Meeting June 15
WHEN: Saturday, June 15, 2002, 10 AM – 12 noon
WHERE: Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 3300 Wilshire Blvd., (at Berendo)
WHO: Town hall meeting is sponsored by the L A Chapter of the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support, a coalition of 1,000 grassroots community organizations in 42 states working on poverty and economic justice issues.
WHAT: With the U.S. Senate poised to begin debate on welfare reform and the House of Representatives having just passed a welfare bill that will increase already strict work requirements on poor families, low-income Los Angeles residents will come together with labor unions, the religious community, elected officials and community leaders to jump-start their campaign to save the safety net. Welfare is an especially important issue in Los Angeles, because the county has a larger welfare caseload than most states, except New York and California. Linda Chavez Thompson, Vice President of the AFL-CIO, will address the crowd on behalf of organized labor.
Welfare recipients and representatives from groups such as CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles), ACORN, POWER (Parents Organized for Westside Renewal), and the Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger and Homelessness will speak on topics ranging from education and training to childcare, living wage jobs, and welfare benefits for immigrants. Elected officials who plan to attend the town hall meeting include Congresswomen Hilda Solis and LucilleRoybal-Allard. Congresswoman Diane Watson and Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke will also participate, if their schedules allow.
VISUALS: At noon, town hall participants will march to the corner of Wilshire and Vermont and form a human billboard that displays slogans about welfare rights.
