After years of strikes and turmoil, the people of Nigeria have forced the government to "do the right thing" and withdraw from the IMF and its repressive "structural adjustment" programs. The emphasis now will be on supporting home-grown industries. We in the anti-globalization movement have a golden opportunity to-literally-"put our money where our mouth is" by supporting the people of Nigeria through purchases of Nigerian goods. Here's our first chance to discredit the IMF and globalization once and for all!
Are you suggesting that little capitalists and little exploiters are better than big ones? What makes you think local Nigerian industries will pay a living wage and offer child care and health benefits?
Even if they did do these things, and somehow their local capitalists could compete with foreign imported goods, then Nigerian capitalists would become strong, and become international exploiters and pillagers, too.
Don't support capitalism of any kind, even if it hides behind the banner of "national self-determination". It's only the self-determination of Nigerian's capitalists. Nigeria's poor will be screwed either way until the workers control their own factories and farms.
