Subject:
Permanent Fee-Demo Extension on 2002 Agenda
Pasted below a recent Press Release from Rep. Jim Hansen announcing his Subcommittee's 2002 National Parks Agenda. Permanent extension of Rec. Fee-Demo program is, as expected, one of Hansen's top priorities.
For those who may not recall, Hansen introduced and championed the original Fee-Demo legislation in 1996. Passage of permanent recreation fee authority
is extremely important to Mr. Hansen and he will do everything in his power to make this happen.
The GOOD news is that Mr. Hansen will retire at the end of this session. If we can block his efforts to permanently authorize recreation user-fees in
2002 then we are unlikely to face such an ardent, and powerful, fee-demo proponent in the future. It is therefore up to us to BLOCK Hansen's permanent extension of fee-demo in 2002 so we can abolish the much detested program on or before it's expiration in 2004.
Scott
PS.... Hansen's Agenda is really the American Recreation Coalition's Agenda
and fee-demo is merely part of a larger agenda as you will see below.
PPS... This year's National Day of Action to stop Fee-Demo has become
more important than ever! The date is June 15th. More info to follow soon.

Subcommittee on National Parks Embarks on
Active 2002 Agenda
Reviewing 2001 Management Policies, Concessionaire Franchise Fees
Top Priorities
Washington, D.C. - The House Resources Subcommittee on National Parks,
Recreation, and Public Lands prioritizes their 2002 agenda with focus on
National Park Service 2001 Management Policies, recreational access to
public lands in the western states, the permanent extension of the
Recreational Fee Demo Program, and the review of concessionaire franchise
fees.
Subcommittee Chairman, George Radanovich Statement:
"I am really looking forward to accomplishing a number of things in the
second session of the 107th Congress, both in the arenas of policy and in
specific legislation. Among these are passing legislation which establishes
a process to designate Heritage Areas, and another that would establish a
workable program to eradicate invasive weeds which have become a major
factor in the degradation of our public lands, especially in the west. I am
also very interested in issues dealing with Yosemite National Park and hope
that compromises can be developed between public access and resources
protection."
