US & UK: Topsy-turvy standards of evidence

by Bronwyn Mauldin Tuesday, Oct. 09, 2001 at 8:30 PM
mauldin_b@hotmail.com

US & UK leaders would have us believe that they must make military strikes against Osama bin Laden and Afghanistan because they do not have enough evidence to bring him to trial. It’s a strange new topsy-turvy world of justice that flies in the face of common sense, where the standard of evidence is higher for taking criminals to trial, but lower if you just want to bomb them.

The U.S. and U.K. have been bombing Afghanistan for two nights now. Reports of Afghani casualties are starting to filter into the press in countries outside the U.S. The only pictures we see in America are glowing green night-vision-tinted views of American military equipment and some small dots of light floating against a black background.

The bombings and especially the civilian casualities bring into sharp relief the troubling question of why the governments of two of the most powerful countries on the planet have not chosen to work with the international community to bring those responsible for the crimes of September 11 to justice. Instead, they decide to bomb the country where criminals may live.

Perhaps worst of all, American and British leaders would have us believe that they must make military strikes against Osama bin Laden and Afghanistan because they do not have enough evidence to bring him to trial.

This type of editorial something that is relatively easy to hear in the rest of the world apart from the US, but I can imagine you will suffer the label of traitor by most in your country..

It gives me hope to see this type of article published in the States and I sincerely hope you have success to getting the message across to a population and government wo seem to be all on the level of the British fottball "hooligans" than of rational and thoughtful human beings.

no traitor

No, she is more of a hero to me. I appreciate the analysis and might even push it a bit. What passes for justice in the US is often seen as revenge as well. Rhetorically there seems to be a distinction between military actions and legal actions, but in practice they often have the same outcome.
